Classical French

A chaise longue is a French term for a couch or day bed with an upholstered back.

Although very popular in Britain during Victorian times, there is evidence to suggest that similar seats, where a person could recline, were used by the ancient Egyptians, and then later by the ancient Greeks and Romans.

This classic style chaise needed re-covering. Otherwise the chair was in good repair and the upholstery did not need any attention. We wanted to retain the essence of a Victorian piece when selecting a new fabric so after much thought decided on Sanderson Chatham Slate which has a velvet look and feel. The buttoning at the back was re-done with new buttons in matching fabric. The chaise needed some trim round the edges and we decided on a grey French gimp by Nina Campbell which exactly echoes the colour of the top fabric and is in tune with the style of the piece. The cushion has been replaced with a new one covered in the matching fabric.
